  • Lady of Gentle Magic

    Lady of Gentle Magic

Signed and numbered limited edition 300

    Unmatted --- 8.5"x11" - $35
    Double Matted -- 12"x16" - $50

In a time when education for women was confined to domestic crafts and superstition and ignorance ran rampant, this woman lived a life of service to her community as a healer. Using medicinal and herbal lore passed down from her elders she could speed healing, reduce swelling, halt a fever, and perform small surgeries. Jealous priests who could not equal these feats said she must be allied with evil powers and called her a witch. She was, instead, a great hero. This was the illustrated cover of vol. 8 of the German edition of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, titled Die Schwarze Schwesternschaft.

Signed and numbered limited edition 150

    Unmatted --- 8.5"x11" - $35

When I was little, my father told me that many people would call to me in my life and that the ones which were most attractive were likely to be the ones I should mistrust the most. I had to think on that for a while. I did not want it to be true, but even as a young man I began to see the wisdom in his words. As an old man now, I can attest to it. All that glitters is not gold. The Beautiful Lady of the Rocks is a siren. Her form and call promise everything, but deliver only emptiness.

This painting always makes me happy. It reminds me of happy days when I used to drive from my place in Edmond, OK down to Real and Muff Musgrave's place near Love Field in Dallas. Usually, Real and I would drink coffee, smoke our pipes, and tell each other stories until the sun came up. Muff was incredibly patient with me. Little by little, she and Real were teaching me how to set up and run a viable operation as an artist. Why? Just because they were good people and I needed to be taught. This began as a doodle on one of those long lazy evenings.

    Oh, My Sister...

Signed and numbered limited edition 300

    Unmatted --- 8.5"x11" - $35
    Double Matted -- 12"x16" - $50

A lovely young mermaid explores ancient ruins on the seafloor wondering who could have mad such amazing structures. Then, coming upon a statue, she gasps. "Oh my gosh," she thinks, "it was people just like me." And she grieves for their loss. This was a private commission for a good friend and is a personal favorite of mine. Her rules were: no overt nudity, and she must have black hair. I do not believe in Muses, but if I did, I would say that I meant to comply, but was swayed by my muse to do otherwise. Once I got going with it, this was the way I saw it, and I had to complete it, even if it was rejected and I had to do another for my friend. To my surprise, she liked it and accepted it without changes.

  • Ryver at the Gate

Xanth is a world of puns and fun created by Piers Anthony. For the 1996 Xanth calendar, I was honored to create this portrait of Ryver (Elder brother of Jot and Tittle, son of Lacuna and Vernon, great grandson of Merlin, King of Xanth). His job is to guard the gate to Counter Xanth. His nickname is Water Boy, since he has power over water. Accordingly, I imagined a rather bored Ryver passing the time by juggling balls of water.

My dear friend, Barbara Higgins, is a master costumer. One of my greatest honors was when she created an epic recreation of the character from my painting, Soror Marium. She wanted to present it at the WorldCon Costume Contest, but she said she needed a male companion to escort her down the runway. So, I created Sir Hector and Friend to provide a male counterpart. In the end, the costume for this gentleman was never made, but Barb's presentation was glorious nonetheless.

Your average writer might have been content to lump their short stories together and publish them, but not C.J. She wanted some way to take several different tales and tie them all together, so she imagined a traveler on a space ship passing time with those around her and telling a tale or two to illustrate one point or other that she was trying to make. So, she wrote a story about a storyteller, and who better to play the part than C.J. herself? I was highly amused. I not only got to do another cover for my sister, but I got to do her portrait as well. Great fun.

She is a vision, certainly. But what kind? She appears to be a simple peasant maid passing time with her sewing as she awaits an unknown someone at the crossroads. But in the realm of fantasy she could be much more. Perhaps that gap in the trees is a portal to adventure in another time and place, and she is the guardian of that gate. She seems to beckon with a shy smile, trustworthy, surely. Or is she? Many a thrilling journey has started with less.

  • The Sentry

    The Sentry

Signed and numbered limited edition 150

    Double Matted -- 11"x14" - $50

A fairy warrior stands guard against invading wasps. My parents had a lush, beautiful garden in our backyard. Spurred on by my Childcraft books and comics like Mary Jane and Sniffles, I imagined adventures there where the flowers were as tall as trees and I was very small. Such daydreams were happy and comforting. They still inspire my art. If you like The Sentry, check out my "Little Kingdom" series of paintings in the Gallery.

  • Simple Pleasures

    Simple Pleasures

Signed and numbered limited edition 900

    Unmatted --- 28"x22" - $55

One of my favorite artists is Lawrence Alma-Tadema, English painter of Dutch descent, popular in the Victorian era for his elaborately detailed depictions of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Simple Pleasures is an homage to Alma-Tadema. This was my first painting in oils and remains one of my favorites. My longtime friend and fellow artist, Steve Noyes, guided me in the painting process. For the printing, I moved to Dallas for a couple of weeks while Noyes patiently walked me through the process. Many corrections later, I had a print the same image size as the original which it matched identically in hue, value, and vibrance. Thanks, Steve.
